Early in her career, Kingsbury wrote true crime fiction, including Deadly Pretender, which was developed into a CBS television movie. Kingsbury started her career in journalism writing for the Los Angeles Times and LA Daily News, primarily on the sports beat.

Kingsbury is very family-oriented as the mother of six children—three adopted simultaneously from Haiti.
